To trim the risk associated with concentrated stock ownership, stock protection trusts (SPTs) may be a good option. Advisors can hire managers to run options strategies on their behalf, but that, of course, comes at a price. But option overlay strategies can be cumbersome and time-consuming, requiring advisors to continually re-price contracts as they roll over. Some advisors hedge the risk by buying options contracts and other equity derivatives to cushion a falling stock, or the broader market. Most are concerned about the tax implications, or they are bullish on their employer and don’t see any reason to sell shares. Genital Jousting is largely about disarming masculinity. In a patriarchal society, penises are associated with power. They are considered the dominant sexual organ. But in Genital Jousting, they are often the butt of the joke. We want to present the phallus as something silly, abject, and non-threatening. That isn’t to say that we want to portray penises (and by extension - masculinity) in a purely negative manner. On the contrary, Genital Jousting is also meant to be a loving homage to the penis. It’s a game where two quivering cocks can go on a date, eat spaghetti, and fall in love. We like to think of dicks as lovable and laughable. The colourful art style, the doll-like clothes, the lullaby music - all of these things are done in the name of presenting an alternate view of masculinity. By making the content of the game appear softer, we hope that penises can be viewed as approachable, not just tools, or worse, weapons. While we're definitely putting things into the game in the hopes that it might appeal to a broader range of people (for example women and queer folk), we have no misconceptions about who our major audience is. It’s the same demographic as Broforce, it’s the median Steam player, it’s the people who love dick jokes. And for the most part that probably means someone who identifies as a cisgendered heterosexual male. And perhaps more pertinently, that often means someone who grew up in a sexually repressive (or at the very least, conservative) environment.Īka: us. We, the developers, largely fall into this same demographic. We're just a bunch of default white dudes with a passing interest in sticking things in our butts. You position your initial lines and when you’re coming around, you have light bars in front of you ahead of the cockpit. You can do a side-by-side pattern, a racetrack, or a squeeze, and you can set it up for a 60-foot swath. If you weren’t, the farmer didn’t invite you back. “You had to be pretty good and pretty accurate. “In the old days, we’d count the swaths and pick out landmarks to make sure we were doing a good job,” recounted Horvath. Now in his 56 th season of ag flying, he’s often found skimming treetops in the Pawnee, spraying for gypsy moths, or applying fungicides to wheat, corn, or soybeans. With about 10,000 hours of spraying time - “at plus or minus five feet or nothing” - Horvath is one of the most experienced agricultural pilots around. “So, I stayed, and the next year he said we should be doing this and that, and he asked me to fly one more season. “Come corn time, he asked me to stay and help with the corn,” recalled Horvath with a laugh. He had a retirement party, but then Bennett asked him to stay on and help apply fungicide to the spring wheat crops. He said, ‘Get in there, do the best you can and don’t bust your ass.’”Īfter 40 years in business, Horvath sold Jim’s Flying Service to Rob Bennett in 2017. I remember one guy who was teaching me we were practicing going back and forth across the field. You got to know how many swaths it would take to cover a field. Everything was eyeballed when you were doing your runs. “Back then, you needed a commercial pilot’s license and an exterminator’s license from the Ministry of the Environment. We sprayed liquids, seeded, and applied dry fertilizer. “By the time I got into it, dusting was pretty much done. “I got my business license to air spray in April of 1977,” recalled Horvath, now of age 75. Down the road, the business moved to a farm Horvath purchased in Seaforth, Ontario - and today, Jim’s Flying Service is based at Nixon Airport in Norfolk County, using Tillsonburg Municipal Airport and various other airstrips to support its operations as needed. from Stratford, Ontario, later that same year. He traveled down to Indiana to buy a brand new Piper Pawnee, launching Jim’s Flying Service Ltd. In 1977, he asked Lammens if he could be his business partner - but the idea didn’t appeal to his boss, so Horvath decided to go his own way. We took the windows out and it became a sprayer.”Īfter a couple of years, Horvath became chief pilot and graduated to flying a 450-horsepower open cockpit Stearman, and then a Cessna 188 AGtruck. We took the back seat out of the Cubs and put 50-gallon tanks in it. “Sam had two airplanes and one pilot, so he hired me in 1967. One day, Horvath met Sam Lammens, who ran a small aerial application business out of Glen Meyer, Ontario, flying two Piper J-3 Cubs. Ag pilots sprayed for cut worms in the spring and again for horn worms before the August harvest. In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, tobacco was king in southwestern Ontario. I saw John Tar, the owner, who had seven pilots and seven airplanes - so the best he could offer me was a job as a spare pilot.”įor a month and a half, Horvath worked as a “boy Friday” at Norfolk Aerial Spraying, hoping to get some flight time. She suggested I check out Norfolk Aerial Spraying, down the road in Nixon. Then one day, I was visiting my grandma in Delhi, Ontario. I was a flight instructor for a little while it was nice, but kind of boring. “I wrote about 200 letters to apply, and got two replies back,” he remembered. Horvath, 19, with a Piper J-3 Cub owned by Sam Lammens in Glen Meyer, Ontario. More than anything, he wanted to be a bush pilot. Horvath earned his commercial pilot license by age 18, followed by his float rating in Orillia. Growing up in Norfolk and Oxford Counties, he was fascinated by 1950s crop dusters who swooped in over the fields in Stearman biplanes and Piper Super Cubs.īy age 16, he’d begun lessons at Garth’s Flying Service in Kitchener, Ontario, where his instructor sagely advised him to “maintain thy airspeed lest the ground arise and smite thee.” Like many others, Horvath found himself bitten by the aviation bug. As soon as his chores were finished on the family farm, he’d ride his bike over to the Brantford Municipal Airport, where he’d do odd jobs in the hopes of lucking into the occasional airplane ride. ![]() When he was about 10 years old, Jim Horvath was a hangar rat. If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? Our two children by my wife’s side, in the store from infancy to the 10 and 11-year old’s they are today. We grew into a full-fledged new table showroom and billiard supply store. I was off and running.Īfter 10 years of only doing service jobs (moving, refelting, etc.), my wife and I opened a small used pool table showroom. I borrowed $1500 from my dad and purchased a 1978 Chevy Van for moving services. Customers began inquiring about pool table moving and I began to realize the 504 would not lend itself to this task. I registered for a business license, placed a small in column ad in the yellow pages and officially became DK Billiard Service in 1993. After building up a small base of commercial clients, I decided to expand into the residential market by posting and handing out flyers in the neighborhood. I solicited every bar and cocktail lounge in the area until they let me service their pool tables. I had a set of not yet paid for tools in the back of my Peugeot 504 and one roll of green billiard cloth. In 1992, using the knowledge I gained from John Campbell and Mark Johnson, I started out on my own. I started to see a great opportunity for my own business. I soon started helping co-worker John Campbell on deliveries and repair jobs, soaking up his 25-year experience. I kept my pool table and started with tasks like cleaning the shop, polishing balls and repairing cues. I went to Mark’s dad, Dick Johnson, owner of Golden West Billiards in Orange, CA and talked him into letting me work at the shop. My dad gave me an ultimatum – be gainfully employed by the following week or move out and end up with no pool table. I was 20, unemployed and still living at home. I set it up in my backyard and played pool all the time, even joining tournaments at bars and pool halls to practice my game. My friend Mark helped me get the materials to repair the table. The Delta one-piece slate table needed much repair. I only found that it played worse! Frustrated, I sold my Meucci cue for a 4X8 slate pool table. I even tried taking the table apart and replacing the half inch particle board with a one-inch thick one. The table had a non-slate particle wood playing field, and no matter what, the table would not play “true”. In 1989, I saved enough money to buy a used pool table from a church in Anaheim, California. Data from Vision Mobile last summer showed that 42% of North American mobile developers were already using HTML, CSS, or JavaScript today in some fashion.Īccording to Belanger, hybrid apps help save time and money. Technology research firm Gartner predicts that by 2016, 50% of mobile apps will be hybrid. Why hybrid apps are so popular and powerful today This way, Dropbox does not need to re-implement the login functionality for another platform. “Probably most people don’t realize that when you launch the Dropbox desktop application and see a login page, it’s actually loaded as a web page!” said Belanger. In this way, the hybrid app not only has access to high performing features provided by the specific platform, but also enjoys the cross-platform compatibility and code reuse for those pages loaded in webview.ĭropbox, which has just one codebase written in Python, supports several desktop applications for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The experience is just seamless!” A hybrid app is developed based on the native platform but uses a “webview” to load some pages dynamically from the internet. So what is a hybrid app? “A hybrid app contains both native and web elements that co-exist to form a cohesive user interface. Web apps require Internet connection to download the application on runtime, which makes it easy to iterate, distribute, update, and maintain the application. Web apps are written in browser-supported programming languages (such as HTML, CSS, Javascript) and then rendered by the browser, supporting cross-platform compatibility. However, since a native app is tied to a specific platform, developing native apps for multiple platforms implies more effort is required to develop and maintain different codebases for all supported platforms.Ī web app, as the name implies, is an application that runs in a web browser with internet. In addition, some native apps can be used without internet connection. For instance, a native app on MacOS can use functionalities like pop-up animation and high-resolution image rendering provided by MacOS. It has access to features provided by the operating system. How do you choose the technology to build hybrid apps?īefore introducing the concept of hybrid apps, we first need to know what web apps and native apps are.Ī native app is an application coded for a specific platform such as MacOS, Windows, iOS, and Android, and usually provides high performance and a high degree of reliability. Why are hybrid apps so popular and powerful today? What is a hybrid app? How is it different from a traditional application? His sharing covered the following three aspects: Using web technologies to build hybrid desktop applications makes the development process and product iteration a lot faster. “What do I do at Dropbox? I enjoy creating new ways for people to work together!” said Belanger. Maxime Belanger, who joined their engineering team when there were only 20 employees, shared how he used web technology to build their hybrid desktop application at the World Internet Developer Summit 2015 two weeks ago. In fact, Slack has leveraged web technologies to develop these hybrid applications on different platforms.ĭropbox is another example of a fast-growing startup that has developed a hybrid app. Shortly after launching its successful web-based work-collaboration application, Slack released desktop and mobile applications for multiple platforms at such fast pace that it made everyone wonder how they did it. Founded less than two years ago, the workplace collaboration startup is valued at 2.8 billion dollars in its newest round of funding.
